The Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth

The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti is the largest movement of wild animals in the world and one of nature’s most amazing events. Each year, around 1.5 million wildebeests, along with zebras, gazelles, and predators, travel across northern Tanzania. The journey starts in the southern Serengeti around March and April, as they move in search of water. They pass through the Serengeti’s Western Corridor, crossing the Grumeti River in May and heading toward Kenya’s Masai Mara by July or August. After crossing the dangerous Mara River, they return to the Serengeti and make their way back to the southern Ndutu calving grounds by December, where they stay until March.

Join Bornwild Tours & Safaris to witness this incredible migration, a true highlight of Tanzania’s wildlife.

Why Do Wildebeest Migrate?

The Epic Journey of the Wildebeest Migration

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most extraordinary natural events on Earth, as millions of wildebeests embark on an 800-kilometer journey across the Serengeti. This incredible migration is driven by the search for food, safety, and ideal conditions for calving. During the wet season, the wildebeest move toward the short-grass plains in the south, where the fresh, nutritious grasses support their herds, and predators are more visible, offering a safer environment for calving.

As the plains dry up, the herds begin their trek toward the lush, greener pastures of the western corridor, before heading north, drawn by the abundant rainfall of that region. Despite the grasses being less nutritious in the north, this area becomes their retreat during the dry season. The migration follows a clockwise route, moving from south to west, north, and back to the south as the cycle of nature unfolds.

Best Time to Go

The Cycle of the Great Migration

From January to March, it’s the calving season, and predators are abundant, taking advantage of vulnerable newborns. The herds are in the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) during this period. From April to May, the herds start to move northwestward, following the rainfall and fresh grass. They begin the journey towards the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Between June to August, the herds move further north, reaching the northern Serengeti and crossing the Mara River. This period is characterized by dramatic river crossings and high predator activity.

From September to October, the migration continues in the northern Serengeti and spills over into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. It’s a great time for safaris in both the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, with plenty of wildlife action. Finally, from November to December, the herds start their journey back south towards the Serengeti’s southern plains, following the rains. This period marks the start of the short rains in the Serengeti.

What Makes the Serengeti Migration Special?

The Serengeti Wildebeest Migration is a dynamic and awe-inspiring event, driven by the search for fresh grazing and water. Key moments in the migration include the dramatic river crossings, particularly at the Mara River, where wildebeest and other animals must navigate treacherous waters teeming with crocodiles, creating intense, thrilling scenes. Another remarkable aspect is the calving season, when thousands of wildebeest are born, attracting predators and creating a high-stakes environment where the calves must quickly adapt to survive. Throughout the migration, massive herds of wildebeest move across the Serengeti in search of new grazing areas, with the vast landscape and overwhelming number of animals combining to create one of nature’s most spectacular sights.
